Does this sound like you?
No matter how many times you take a run at a fitness and weight loss program it always ends up with the same excuses for quitting.
Which sometimes translates into “too tired” or “no time” or something similar.
You just cannot seem to fit it in – BUT – if the boss wants you to work late and throws a little overtime $$ at you… Heck you can find the time.
Or maybe you are already pushing two jobs plus weekend stuff to pay the bills.
It turns out that choosing to make money over working out isn’t your fault.
Its chemically induced!
Studies show that acquiring money emits a chemical in our brain similar to cocaine. Cocaine – the “feel good” drug that has destroyed many lives – is a hugely powerful drug. Basically because it really, really, feels so darn good.
Its a stimulant that cannot compare to anything else. Think of the excitement of the casino’s and lights, the possibility of winning more than you can count. Gets the ole ticker going doesn’t it?
When you work out you get a boost of self-esteem, you feel happy and more joyful. That is because you have given yourself a shot of Dopamine, Serotonin, Epinephrine, Endorphin, and probably a few others.
So why if working out feels so good – why wouldn’t you do it?
Because working feels better.
Working and making money – and the prospect of the status we can buy – gives us more of a tickle than a good workout.
Think about it for a minute. As much as we don’t like to go to work – we do like buying stuff. Buying stuff feels good too.
Have you ever sat on the couch at home and thought to yourself “I wish I WANTED to go work out”. It would be easier if you WANTED to.
So now you know, the making money chemical is a brain stimulant, and the working out chemicals are more antidepressants and heart stimulant.
What if you could make money exercising?
There are lots of things you can do. One is to be a walking tour guide in your city. You know where you live very well so why not advertise yourself as a great guide? I have met some wonderful tour guides and had a great time roaming new places.
How about being a golfing caddy on the weekend? Or work as a bicycle messenger. You don’t need to change your current employment, just pick up odd jobs that require physical labour if its money that’s driving you. Landscaping, build rock walls, dig trenches. Tons of things that can be done for money that require a physical effort.
Get a metal detector and comb the beaches and hiking trails. The faster you move the more ground you cover and more likely you will find a “treasure”.
A little twist to this is – according to studies – fit people actually DO make more money.
The explanations for this are:
Regular exercise makes you smarter. All that healthy blood pumping fresh oxygen to your brain during exercise has been tested to put a few points on a person’s IQ.
Looking good makes a person feel good and they emit a glow of confidence. The boss seems to like this sort of thing and it translates over into promotions.
Exercise makes you more alert, able to do more in less time, improves concentration. You will ‘shine’ as an employee and get your money on the other end. All as a result of choosing to fit exercise into your life.
In conclusion: by making the time to exercise during your day you will end up being able to have ALL your brain drugs!
