Disadvantages to Pedal Exercisers
Most of the negatives to using pedal exercisers can be solved by selecting a different exerciser for the purpose, or you may need to alter the environment a bit to accommodate the one you have chosen.
Bikes with Desks Attached
The all in one units have two obvious drawbacks.
1. No one wants to sit on a bike seat all day.
2. This isn’t your regular desk so it is limited to the immediate work at hand.
Fortunately there are some models of desk bikes with comfortable seats for pedalling long periods. The Stel’Air Desk Bike comes with a nicely padded seat just for this purpose.
The perfect way to fit in exercise while you work. Compact, lightweight, and can fold up out of your way when not in use. The solution for people who need a cardio workout while working.

All you need to do is pre-plan your work so you don’t have to keep going back to the desk for additional papers.
Taller Pedal Exercisers
To date the lowest profile desk pedal machine is the DeskCycle. The DeskCycle will accommodate most people who aren’t super tall so they can stay seated comfortably at their desk and keep pedalling.
If you are taller or do have under desk pedal equipment that is higher there are a few of options to try to make this more comfortable for you.
1. You can lower your chair. This might help to change the angle enough of your legs so you can pedal and still work at your desk. This is likely not the best option though.
2. Raise your desk. You can use blocks or bed risers under your existing desk.
3. Purchase an adjustable height desk. The advantage to having an adjustable height desk is you can now use it for standing, sitting, pedalling, and who knows what ingenious ways to stay fit at work you will come up with when you have one to play with!
Pedalling the Pedal Exerciser is Noisy
Some machines are noisy because they squeak or their tension mechanism is adjusted by friction control knob. This can end up getting quite loud. One way to dampen this is to try some graphite powder on the surface where the knob clamps down.
Other reasons that your machine could create noise is because you have it on a hard surface and the movement of the pedals is being echoed or the vibration (even a little bit) is picked up and carried over the floors surface. Try putting down a piece of carpet or a rubber mat to dampen the noise.
The original and best built under desk exerciser. Super quiet and used in offices all over the world.

Another alternative is to choose a pedaler with a magnetic resistance system instead of friction. Not only are these machines quieter, they are superior design.
The Better Under Desk Pedals are More Expensive
If you have a really tight budget and can only opt for the $20 – $30 pedals then you just need to make a few allowances for them. The cheaper machines are lightweight and friction resistance controlled. They wear out quicker, easier to push around, and noisier. But you can still work with this using some of the fixes already suggested.
As far as what to do to keep your desk pedaller from moving around there are a few options covered below.
The more expensive machines are well made with good guarantees too. The people who buy them are happy with their decision to do so.
The Under Desk Pedaller Keeps Moving
When the pedals keep moving away from you there are a few things you can do.
- Best Deals on Pedal Exercisers
★★★★★ #1 Best Sellers. Get and stay in shape while pedalling in your favorite chair. Best pedallers for Office, Home, and More. ON SALE NOW!
First of all, how are you using them? If you pedal down on them they shouldn’t be pushed away. If you are trying to use them in front of you then the force will be more than the weight of the bike. If this is the case and you don’t want to adjust your pedals to be more under you then you have to improvise.
Some machines come with a Velcro tether that keeps their chair from rolling away from the pedals exerciser, in other cases you can use rope, or belts.
If your pedals have a t-bar for the feet you could actually use a “c” clamp to attach them to a piece of carpet. Make the carpet big enough to go under your chair and the pedals. This way the weight of the chair keeps everything in place.
Keep Your Chair from Rolling Away
Aside from the solution to the above where you keep the desk pedaller from moving away from you is keeping the chair from rolling away.
Some people have an issue with their office chair rolling away. Here are several simple fixes to this common issue.
Exercising with the Pedaller Makes You Sweat
Sweating in the office can make some people uncomfortable. It is true that some people sweat more than others and feel insecure about it. Certainly no one like to draw negative attention to themselves so what can you do?
One thing to remember is you don’t have to work hard with your under desk pedal machines to gain a benefit. The heavier duty style of pedaller does allow for a person to get a really great workout but you don’t have to. Set it on a lower resistance and just use it for leg movement. You will still pump the blood and still burn calories. It will still be helpful with your digestive and cardio health.
Other options include diet changes. Sugar consumption can cause sweating. You can wear a cotton t-shirt under your regular shirt to help soak up the sweat. There are also sweat guards that you can swap out throughout the day too.
Advantages to Pedal Exercisers
Exercise is Good
The most obvious reason why pedal exercisers are an advantage is because exercise is a good thing. More than that though is the type of exercising you get and the additional health benefits you have as a result.
Just by placing your feet on the pedals will remove the pressure from the back of your legs they usually get when resting on your chair. This helps with circulation itself and when you pedal the nice fresh and oxygenated blood is now reaching all your leg muscles delivering healing.
This is indeed a cardio activity that is burning calories. More calories than you would get if you just sat there.
There are some pedallers that have been designed to use as generators. This one in particular can run and charge a 12 volt battery. Pedal your TV time or whatever it takes to keep you motivated.
Burn Calories Promote Weight Loss
Many of the pedal exercisers come with display monitors that can track your time and distance so you can calculate your calories burned using special programs. For the DeskCycle you can use the calorie calculator made specifically for this bike.
Improved Mood, Productivity, & Energy
General exercise produces those feel-good chemicals in the brain that improves our mood. When we feel good we often do more. The dull day takes on a brighter hue and our energy improves too.
With a clearer mind tackling those projects things just get done faster.
Pedalling Does NOT Interrupt Work
The majority of people can pedal while they work. Provided your machine is quiet you can carry out all your work functions including conference calls.
Mini pedaller will adjust the height to suit your needed height. This adjustment is great for shorter people who need to lower the height on the pedaller to exercise their arms on the table top.

Occasionally a person will find that they “sway” from side to side when they pedal. This is because the legs aren’t accustomed to this type of motion. If you are having difficulty keeping your body stable while you pedal you will have to make a couple of adjustments and train your body. It will only take a few days until it becomes more comfortable NOT to sway.
Be sure your chair is set comfortably and the pedals are comfortable. Set the machine at a lower resistance. Sit up straight and keep your abdomen tight. Focus on pushing ONLY with your legs. It might feel wrong to start because you are used to using the momentum of your body for these movements. Keep the focus on your leg movement ONLY.
Don’t be concerned when you find you have slipped back into swaying, just stop, correct your body posture and go again. Like anything else that is new to your body movement, your brain will quickly build a new neural pathway so the pedalling will soon be comfortable in just a couple of days.
Mini-Pedaler for the Upper Body Too
Most of the desk pedalling machines and other mini pedal exercisers can be put on a counter top and used for the upper body as well. Although the DeskCycle is made specifically for under the desk and not really recommended to use for the arms because of the clearance off the table – the MagneTrainer is made for arm and leg uses. It even has a variety of accessories to make using it effective and comfortable.
Smooth and quiet. The Stel’Air Medical is used in hospitals, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, assisted living centres, at home, in the office, at schools, and many other applications.
