The Global Health summit hosted in Calgary from Nov 1 – 3 2019 is where several medical professionals will be sharing their research on the benefits of exercising while on dialysis.
Approximately 55 experts in the field of exercise in dialysis and kidney disease are gathering together representing 21 countries from 6 continents.
How Intradialytic Exercise “Changed My Life!”
One mans journey from too sick and overweight to becoming healthy enough for the transplant list. Participation in the Intradialytic Program and positive results.
The summit is being held at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel where the list of invites includes nephrologists, cardiologists, kinesiologists, physiotherapists, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and psychologists, who conduct pioneer work and research on intradialytic exercise.
They will network and collaborate in support of innovative exercise programs to provide better results for patients with renal failure.
Chairing the summit is Stefan Mustata, MD, FRCPC. He has several published studies focused on exercise for patients with chronic kidney disease. Mustata is a clinical associate professor at the University of Calgary and staff nephrologist.
Recently released research results on intradialytic exercise show:
– 12% increase in urea clearance
– 26% reduction in hospitalization
– 61% shorter length of stay
– Lowered risk for low blood pressure
Also attending the GREX summit this weekend is James Kenneth Gray O.C., A.O.E., philanthropist from Calgary who ignited the creation of Science Alberta Foundation. He is co-founder of Canadian Hunter Exploration, Director of RS Technologies Inc., and a long time supporter of the Calgary kidney clinic. His late wife Josie struggled with kidney disease for years.

Grey’s company has helped to raise funds for the clinic that assisted in purchasing new specialized dialysis chairs.
Some objectives of the meeting are:
- to establish a mission and vision for the GREX group,
- promote education on developing global research networks,
- exercise implementation,
- increasing the relevance of exercise in nephrology,
- and to develop a strategy to further international physical activity and exercise research in kidney disease and dialysis.
The Calgary dialysis clinics have combined kinesiology and nephrology by giving dialysis patients Stel’Air Medical Pedallers so they can exercise during their dialysis treatments.
Used successfully in hospitals, rehab centers, and at home. Very quiet to not disturb anyone else. Pedal during dialysis treatments or just for fun.

Exercising is helping to increase the effectiveness of the dialysis function of removing toxins from the system. Participating patients report they feel healthier, have lost weight, and feel stronger as a result of the Intradialytic Exercise Program.
