The “Yo-Yo” Rule is one of the most talked about, and complained about, Weight Loss Challenge rules there is. It first made a lot of noise and garnered much attention from the HealthyWage participants who were directly affected by it.
However, it is a GOOD rule. It helps to protect a person from unhealthy weight loss habits and is being adopted in one form or another by other “lose Weight Win Money” Challenge organizations. It is probably also a good rule to adapt to your own in-house or office group weight loss challenge events too.
HealthyWage Yo-Yo Rule Scandal
The HealthyWage Yo-Yo scandal peaked when this new players rule-change reached a scandalous level. Mostly because they implemented the rule-change while many people were still in mid-challenge. Although they are “allowed” to change rules and regs whenever they please, and without notice, this was viewed as being very unfair by many.
What is the Yo-Yo Rule?
The Yo-Yo rule is specific to the individual HealthyWager Challenge only. Essentially the rule ensures that you (the participant) is never paid to lose the same weight more than once.
For example; if you joined a HealthyWager at 250-lbs and lost 50-lbs and collected your Prize, then the next time you joined a HealthyWager you would have to start at the weight you stopped at. Which in this case would be 200-lbs.
Prior to the existence of the rule you could gain back the weight and start over. When they implemented the new Yo-Yo Rule they went through the database and closed down people who were already in the middle of their Challenge. The participants directly targeted were reimbursed but still it raised an onslaught of complaints.
One of the issues was about the email itself that they sent to participants. One part of the email indicated that they implemented the new rule because yo-yo dieting can be unhealthy – BUT – then you may be eligible to yo-yo in the future. AND – should you choose to complain, there was no need to as they have already complained (to themselves) on your behalf and… you lost.
Fortunately everyone did get their money back but some folks were deep into their Challenge and close to collecting their Prize. This individual was allowed to sign-up, completed and won, and still was refused.
🤔 But what if you didn’t win a Prize and gained the weight back?
