The best brand of road bike will depend on what you want to use it for. There are a few classes of bikes and they can be grouped in beginner, intermediate, and professional (or advanced).
Each category will have it’s super expensive and economical versions. The higher up the list you get the more expensive the bike.
Another consideration is the difference in quality. If you are serious about biking and want quality buy one from your local bike shop and not the big box store.
If pricing is important then before you start to look decide on how much you have to spend. The price on the bike at the shop may not be the total price if you have more customization and upgrades you desire. Other necessities are helmet, gloves, shoes, clothing, lighting, license (in some places) etc.
Bicycles also require maintenance. How much will you do and how much will you rely on the bike shop to do. Bottom expense for maintenance will include at least once a year tune up and a small emergency kit of a multi tool, chain grease, tire pump, and patch kit.
TIP – when you are buying your bike try to negotiate at least the maintenance kit, one tune-up and a helmet in the bike price.
If you think you will be upgrading later then it might be a better choice to start with a mid-range bike if you can afford it.
Common Road Bike Upgrades
The first things most folks will upgrade on their bikes are the saddle, tires, wheels, and pedals. These few changes can make the bike more comfortable to ride for the purpose you bought it for. Choosing a saddle better suited for your butt is always a nice addition as well.
If you want a bike for general sporting needs and looking for endurance, the bike will be built more for comfort. This means the bar will be positioned higher than a racing bike so you can sit more relaxed. This is better for the longer road rides.
Bicycle Frame Materials
The frame is higher or heavier depending on what it is made of. Generally they are mad of steel, carbon fibre, aluminum, and/or titanium. Some of these can cost a lot of money.
Aluminum bicycle frame – Commonly found on the beginners bikes. The aluminum tubing frame is lightweight and won’t bend easily.
Steel bicycle frame – Heavier that the others but is very durable. Commonly used when a frame is manufactured custom fit.
Carbon fibre frame – These frames can be shaped in some really unique ways. Super light and strong and the price can be anything from reasonable to ridiculous.
Titanium bicycle frame – strong and comfortable like the steel frame but much lighter. Price wise its really expensive.
